This book is a reworking of “Patria mia,” printed in the New Age, London (sections I-V, VIII-XI, VI-VIL, in that order) between 5 September and 14 November 1912—C49-51, 56, 59-Go, 62, 57-58—and “America: Chances and Remedies,” also printed in the Mew Age in six instalments between 1 May and 5 June 1913—C79-83, 85. The revised manuscript was sent in 1913 for publication to Seymour, Daughaday and Company (publishers of the magazine Poetry) in Chicago. Arrangements for publication were interrupted in 1915 by the dissolution of the publishers’ partnership with consequent “adjustments of assets,” during which the manuscript disappeared. It came to light again in 1950. The publisher explains these circumstances in a preface (pp. 15-16).
